What Does a Neck Lift Treat?
Neck lift surgery primarily targets visible issues such as sagging neck skin, excess fatty deposits, and muscle banding in the neck area. It is often recommended for patients concerned with turkey neck—the loose, drooping skin that develops under the chin and jawline. Many patients combine a neck lift with a lower facelift and neck lift procedure to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
Benefits of Neck Lift Surgery
Patients opting for neck lift surgery in Orange County can benefit from:
- Significant improvement in sagging neck skin treatment
- Enhanced definition along the jawline and neck
- Reduction of muscle band visibility and tightening of neck muscles
- Smoother neck contours and reduced “turkey neck”
- Long-lasting, natural-looking results
- Ability to address multiple concerns with combined lower facelift and neck lift procedures
Good Candidates for a Neck Lift
Patients looking to eliminate excess neck skin and fat while tightening sagging neck muscles are good candidates for a neck lift. If you have a double chin or a turkey wattle neck, this is an ideal solution.
The neck lift works best for patients who are generally healthy and have a positive disposition. Keeping expectations realistic is advised. Patients who smoke will need to quit several weeks before their scheduled surgery. This will help to avoid a prolonged recovery process and minimize the chance of complications.
Your Neck Lift Surgery Consultation
Patients need to schedule a consultation to make the most of what a neck lift has to offer. During the consultation, the neck area will be examined, and patients will be asked questions about their medical history and their expectations.
Patients will learn more about the details of the neck lift procedure from start to finish, including preparation and recovery. Questions are highly encouraged.
The Neck Lift Surgery
A neck lift procedure begins with either general anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. This ensures patient comfort throughout the procedure.
Once the anesthesia has taken full effect, incisions provide access to the underlying tissues. Small incisions may be created below the chin and/or behind each ear. The required combination of cervicoplasty, liposuction surgery, and platysmaplasty will then be performed.
Cervicoplasty eliminates loose neck skin with a scalpel and tightens the remaining skin. Liposuction involves removing fatty tissue using a cannula and medical suction. Platysmaplasty involves rejoining and tightening sagging platysma muscles with internal sutures. Once all changes have been made, the incisions are closed with stitches.
Neck Lift Recovery
Patients must stay home from work during neck lift recovery for ten to fourteen days. This will allow them to rest and recover. They must also avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for three to six weeks.
Bruising and swelling will be present in the neck and jawline. A post-surgical elastic garment, cold compresses, and keeping the head elevated will help minimize these issues. Drains may also be placed for a short time to drain excess fluid.
Patients can see their complete neck lift results once all swelling has subsided. At this time, they can enjoy their neck’s sculpted and youthful appearance.
Cost of Neck Lift Surgery
The cost of a neck lift can vary considerably. Several factors contribute to the overall price, including the complexity of the procedure, the cost of anesthesia, and combination procedures performed (if there are any). During your consultation, Dr. Al-Hakeem or Dr. Hu will provide you with a detailed cost estimate based on your specific needs and the details of your surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What type of anesthesia is used for a neck lift?
Neck lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or, in some cases, with local anesthesia and sedation. The choice of anesthesia will be discussed with you during your consultation and will depend on the extent of the procedure and your preferences.
How visible will the scars be after a neck lift?
Incisions for a neck lift are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring. They are often located around the ears and potentially under the chin. While some scarring is inevitable, the incisions are typically well-hidden.
Can a neck lift be combined with other procedures?
Yes, a neck lift is often combined with other procedures, such as a facelift, to achieve a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Depending on your individual needs and goals, it can also be combined with eyelid surgery, brow lift, or chin augmentation.
Will weight fluctuations affect my neck lift results?
Significant weight gain or loss after surgery can impact the appearance of your neck and potentially affect the longevity of your results. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve the contour achieved by the neck lift.
Are there alternatives to surgery for "turkey neck"?
While some mild cases of “turkey neck” may respond to non-surgical treatments, persistent sagging skin and muscle laxity usually require a surgical neck lift for effective correction.
