Plastic Surgery Institute of California Physician Seeks Additional Research on Link Between Weight Loss Surgery and Lower Risk of Cancer

Huntington Beach, California

A recent review of data collected by the University HealthSystem Consortium, which collects information from academic medical centers and hospitals throughout the US, showed that patients who undergone bariatric surgery experienced a 71% reduction in the risk of developing uterine cancer when compared to patients who had not had the procedure. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center undertook the study, which can be found on the UC San Diego Health System site here. Additionally, the study found that patients who were able to maintain normal weight and BMI levels after surgery, the risk of later developing uterine cancer dropped by as much as 81%. Researchers agreed that while additional study of the data needs to be undertaken, the link between bariatric surgery and lower risk of cancer “could be significant.” The study was recently published in the journal Gynecologic Oncology. Researchers looked at medical data from over 7.4 million patients, including 103,797 who had undergone some form of bariatric surgery and 44,345 who had developed uterine cancer.

Dr. Kristy Ward, of the department of reproductive medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, talked about the findings, “Estimating from various studies that looked at increasing BMI and endometrial cancer risk, a woman with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 would have approximately eight times greater risk of endometrial cancer than someone with a BMI of 25. This risk likely continues to go up as BMI goes up.”

“The link between obesity and various forms of cancer is something the medical community is very interested in and we’re definitely in the group that is calling for more research in this area.” Dr. Mazin Al-Hakeem, a practicing physician at the Plastic Surgery Institute of California. “We’re thrilled when we see data indicating that through weight loss surgery and lifestyle change a patient may be able to significantly reduce their risk of uterine cancer. We’re looking forward to learning about additional benefits yet to be discovered.”
